You want what with your soda?

Yes, basil. I would like basil with my soda. As in the designer, Basil Soda. Normally I would stay away from anything that Paris Hilton likes; however, seeing her in a Basil Soda gown tonight on the red carpet caused me to break out my Google search skills to find out who this fantastic designer is.

Starting out in Beirut, then moving onto Ellie Saab, he’s been a mainstay on the fashion scene for quite some time. Whether he’s showcasing asymmetry, romanticism or structure, his design is  impeccable.

One of my favorites from the Spring 2010 collection…

Whitney, what?

It’s almost eery that Whitney Houston would pass away on the eve of the biggest night in music, and on the night of her mentor, Clive Davis’, most famed party. I’m sure I’ll be on of many to post not only about the topic of Whitney’s death, but also on the legacy she left behind.

While her music was an inspiration to many, the style she brought forth with each reinvention of an album was always on point– from her 1985 debut– complete with big hair and Dynasty-era makeup– to her reworked edgy mix on Your Love is My Love. This leather wearing, sultry looking woman was my idol in high school, with women-friendly anthems that shaped MY style.

So, while you’re watching the Grammy’s, belt out your best “I Will Always Love You” and channel your inner “Bodyguard.”

Discount style

Having great style is not always about spending thousands of dollars on a dress. Quite frankly, it’s the opposite. The dress isn’t what makes you stylish– it’s how you feel about yourself in the dress. No matter how much it costs.

That’s probably why so many designers are bringing fashion “to the masses” with their affordable “discount” lines as they like to call them. These are the pieces in your Targets, JC Penney’s and Kohl’s– also known as that places we shop.

But you wouldn’t find all the designers advertised on TV in all the stores. If you’re lucky enough to get the new Jason Wu collection in your town, snap it up! Even if it’s not in your size, style is about having good enough sense to alter it to fit your body, not the other way around.

Here are three …

photo: www.advancedbuildings.org

Here are three things nobody ever teaches you in school:

1. How to fix a broken toilet

2. How to understand a prescription co-pay

3. How to say “no” to social events

Each is very different but clearly connected, as all of these items are life skills. Tonight was my first foray with the toilet. I’ll still never understand the whole mail order prescription versus walking to your local drug store. And, I still have a hard time saying no to social events I never wanted to attend in the first place.

But, once you master each of these, you (and I) will both be quite fashionable. Because let’s be honest, it’s so NOT cool to call your dad at age 30 (ok, 29) to ask how to fix the flapper on a toilet.

Make a wish

I came across the movie When in Rome tonight. You know the one, Josh Dumhamel lookin’ oh so fine in a tux. Kristen Bell crushin’ a bit with her periwinkle bridesmaid dress and perky pony tail.

While both stars are super stylish, airing the appropriately themed “unlucky in love” movie right around Valentine’s Day– really? Making the overworked, career loving, expensively dressed heroine seem like her life isn’t complete without meeting that special someone is completely unoriginal…even for me.

If only it were as simple to throw a coin into the “Fountain of Love” and make a wish. I guess I need to take a trip to Rome to find out.

Winner by a hair

With the Oscars right around the corner, here is my pick for Best Actress. Michelle Williams is perfection is a dainty pixie cut. While I don’t have the guts to chop off my hair, I certainly admire those who leave home without their fashion security blanket.

So, what’s your security blanket??

Colored hair…

Pink, blue, green, orange. These are all colors that I love…

… in clothing.

… in nail polish.

… in jewelry.

They are NOT colors I admire, or quite frankly, even like when talking about hair color. Here’s a tip for all the ladies out there who are ready and willing to jump on the colored hair trend: if you are not a singer, actor or a trust fund baby, just say no. Even writers, poets, artists (yes, that also means the computer type graphic ones…) or anyone else who thinks she is individualistic enough, you still need to just say no.

Remember: you are not in a Disney movie and you are not Rainbow Bright. Take the color out of your hair.

Superbowl style

So, in the most famous sports showdown of the year (okay, the year is still young…), who turned up a winner? Yes, the Giants technically won the game– with a great come from behind victory– but we all know the Superbowl is REALLY about the commercials.

In the commercial category, a couple of “style” related winners come to mind:

M&M’s “Just My Shell”:

H&M’s David Beckham Bodywear:

Other winners were the Coca Cola’s cute polar bears with their fantastic scarves and the GM apocalypse, where Twinkies never go out of style!
