Take Women’s Heath advice : Dress thinner

I often write about what to wear or not wear. This fantastic article from one of my favs, Women’s Heath, reviews how to dress thinner (something every woman is interested in).

Happy reading!

No more nude

Anyone who saw my Twitter feed yesterday blowing up about the Golden Globes now knows that I absolutely, positively had an opinion on most, if not all of the dresses and suits that walked the red carpet last night.

While many will write about the themes, midnight blue suits for the gentlemen and nude colored dresses for the ladies, I will write about the lack of lipstick many of the starlets chose not to wear.

In her “after party” interview with E!, Sopia Vergara said that she goes to sleep in her lipstick. Others should take the hint. With the bright TV lights and flesh colored dresses, you need something that pops (and I’m not talking about seeing your nipples through your dress– you know who you are!) Whether it’s a light pink or radiant red, this is an important feature to emphasis when flaunting your skin tone.

So, a word to the wise: a nude dress and nude lip is a no-no.

Fashion Motivation

It’s funny how fashion is a motivator for many things in life. For me (and I’m assuming many other people), having an unbelievable ensemble is important for my top three motivations:

1. A hot date
2. A great workout
3. A productive workday

If I pull it apart, the most frequent activity on that list is the workout part. Work sometimes gets in its way and hopefully the hot date will lead to activity that makes clothes less important (yes, I really just implied that…)

Nonetheless, I’m not alone in thinking clothes help with the workout part at least. Yet another Women’s Health article agrees with me by saying the having a crisp fresh outfit prepped the night before is motivation for an early morning workout. Now, while I may have butchered the meaning of it, regardless of what time you work out, I bet it sounds much more appealing with a cute new outfit.

As for where to buy it, I always love me some Lululemon. I know some of you might be thinking it’s overpriced; however, I disagree for a couple of reasons. Most importantly, it lasts forever. You tell me how long Target’s stuff last after many, many washes…

That’s what I thought.

Save time, wear boot cut

I just read an article in Women’s Health magazine that suggested one way to look thinner is by choosing smarter clothing choices. Shocking, I know. It then goes on to name 5 options, including one of my favorites: boot cut jeans.

I can feel some of you seething, saying, “these are not on trend!” To which I will yell back, “I don’t care!”

There is no trend in the world that is worth making yourself look (and feel) less than mediocre. So, pull on your boot cuts, take the gym time you just saved yourself and spend it with family and friends instead. Believe me, you will thank me later!

Work worthy uniforms

Two days in to 2012, style has not been my strong suit. I’ve gotten accustomed to lounge pants, hooded sweatshirts and flip flops. Not a good start…

To help sort out this horrifying situation, I have one sure fire fix: going back to work. If you ever think that wearing lounge clothes to work is appropriate, think again. It’s not.

I would rather you go uniform style. It works for many starlets (think Angeljna Jolie and Jennifer Anniston) and athletes (hello Hines Ward and Tom Brady). It could be your easy new solution for looking fabulous.

For some, it might be casual: dark demon jeans, black turtleneck, colorful scarf and ballet flats. For others, you’ll be a bit classier with a shift dress, boots/heels, and again, a scarf.

But whatever your work environment, remember these three words: no lounge pants!

A fashion forward year

It’s a new year; does this mean a new you? You got all dressed up to ring in 2012 but now that the hoopla has passed and Auld Land Sine has been sung, will you carry your fashion trend forward?

I brought back some classic black peep toe heels, with a bit of black and navy. The heels, with their delicate patent leather bow and velvet base, edged out my tried and true black flats.

So, for 2012, I urge you to go beyond your comfort zones to make fashionable choices.

Think Differently

When Apple’s “Think Different” ads exploded onto the scene, they were not just a piece of innovative advertising. They were a cry for people to break outside of their boxes and look at the world in a new way.

These ads and what they represented are not all that different from that happens season after season on the runways in New York, Paris and Milan, where the fashion evoke a metamorphosis of models creating a mystique that you could, for just one second, transform yourself and look at your world from a new, better way.

One small way I do this each day is by the clothes I put on and how I paint my face (aka makeup!) By mixing patterns and textures with colors and styles, I create my own perspective. And I don’t care what anyone says, looking good and feeling good go hand in hand.

So, go ahead and put on something you feel amazing in. Trust me, your day will be that much better because of it.

Love is just a four-letter word

Love is just a four-letter word. A perfectly coined phrase from Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs biography. (by the way, a MUST read if you haven’t already done so…) So what do you love? Here are some of my loves:

A pair of perfectly worn jeans
A gently worn ski hat, blending the lines of practically versus hipster longing
A pair of ballet flats

And, perhaps not fashionable, but more so inspiration is great alliteration. It makes the most important outfit sound even more spectacular.

Fashion vs. style

Fashion is not always about being in style. And being in style is not always fashionable. Case in point: many of our Hollywood celebrities are prone to wearing hoodies, vintage tees and ripped jeans (you know who you are Kristen Stewart). This has started a fashion trend that was not fashionable but is now in style. Sad, I know.

For 2012, let’s try to bring back some trends that help us lead the future of fashion rather than lag behind. What are some of your favorites you hope to see more of next year? Please don’t say bell bottoms…

The day after…

So it’s the day after Christmas. The presents have been opened, and you’re already out the door for the “day after” Christmas sales and gift returns. Some of you will cash in your new gift cards, others will head to Walmart to exchange the pajama jeans you know you’ll never wear, and finally the rest of you might consider returning that god awful sweater with the shoulder pads that looks like it should be on a cast member of Designing Women.

While we all love gifts, our personal style is never completely captured by those purchasing them. Unless, of course, you’re psychic.

So, embrace the fact that you are not alone and join the long lines of people also returning gifts this year
